Welcome to Sydenham School We take great pleasure in introducing you to our highly successful and very popular school. Indeed, our recent OFSTED Inspection, in February 2007 graded us as outstanding across the board. Sydenham is a girls' comprehensive school which strives to prepare young women to meet the challenges of the contemporary world. We encourage all our students to seek academic success, to develop their personal, learning and thinking skills and their ability to adapt to a range of situations. We want our students to make the most of every opportunity on offer and to build a confident, caring attitude as they go. Students know what is expected of them at Sydenham. We work hard to maintain a well- ordered and pleasant environment because we know that a happy, secure girl with a sense of belonging to a community, is one who has the very best support for her learning. Our prospectus will give you a flavour of life at Sydenham, but our students and their fantastic attitudes to learning are our best advertisement. We look forward to showing you the work of our school. Ms B. Williams Headteacher Welcome " I think the school is a good school very friendly and helpful." because all the staff and students are 2.

" The curriculum is varied and offers everyone a chance to be successful, regardless of ability." Sydenham School Specialist School _ Science and Mathematics In September 2003, we were proud to open our doors as the first specialist school in Lewisham. Since then our specialism and our whole school STEM focus have ensured that our girls are particularly well prepared for careers involving Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. It has also enabled us to provide additional opportunities for our students through our close links with Imperial College and our environmental and sustainable development work. Through activities as varied as attendance at an Imperial College Maths Summer school, taking part in a STEM deep learning day, visiting the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales with the Engineering Club, becoming a Science Ambassador working with local primaries, working in our organic garden or feeding our free range chickens; every Sydenham student's experience is enriched through our specialism. We deliver a wide range of Science and Maths courses with many girls going on to study the three Sciences, Maths and Further Maths at KS5. We also have very successful Applied Science courses at both GCSE and A'level. Our purpose built Science Community Centre allows us to offer masterclasses for local primaries and our Community team organise a host of activities including visiting lecturers, workshops for parents and joint projects with the Hornimans Museum. Although our specialism is in Science and Mathematics, these are not the only areas we specialise in. In 2007 Sydenham received an Artsmark Gold Award from the Arts Council of England, recognising our commitment to providing opportunities across all the arts from drama to music, design to literature, dance to sculpture. In 2008 Sydenham was recognised as a High Performing Specialist School and awarded another Specialism ( RAPP) which gives us additional funding to work with other schools, helping them to improve their practice through sharing our expertise. This has allowed us to be at the forefront of national developments in teaching and learning and improve the quality of our provision still further. We hope that in the 2009_ 10 academic year, we shall enter the Building Schools for the Future ( BSF) programme. This will mean rebuilding and refurbishment to upgrade our buildings in line with modern learning and teaching requirements. This will truly be an opportunity to join us in shaping your daughter's education for the future. 3.
